The Glenorchy 4WD Farm Tours take you on a half-day rural discovery of Mount Earnslaw Station, in the heart of New Zealand's high country farmland.

Mount Earnslaw Station is a 130-year-old working farm set in the spectacular alpine environment of Glenorchy at the head of Lake Wakatipu. Its remote location is simply breathtaking. To the north lies the glacier-capped Mount Earnslaw, 2,820m above sea level, to the west stands Mount Alfred at 1,375m and the Glenorchy station is flanked by the Rees and Dart Rivers.

Extreme and variable weather conditions, marginal soil and remote transportation costs have led to agricultural diversification in the Glenorchy region. Mount Earnslaw Station has developed an effective multi-livestock operation in this challenging environment. Angus cattle, Perendale sheep and Red deer are farmed on the extensive flatlands lying between the station's rivers and lakes.

As part of a small guided 4WD tour, explore this unique high country station. You agri-guide will explain every facet of high country farming as you pass through paddocks stocked with deer, sheep and cattle. Enjoy a walking tour of the farmyard and woolshed.

The agricultural calendar is a busy one, so each of our Glenorchy tours will simply fit in with the farmer's daily operation.

Following a short 'smoko' refreshment, visit Reid Lake, a favourite spot for black swans, paradise ducks and the occasional blue heron. A short stroll up Mount Alfred provides a sweeping view over Diamond Lake and Paradise valley.

Rural Glenorchy Tours

Our trip would not be complete without a drive around the rural township of Glenorchy. First surveyed in 1864, the town's activities have included gold mining, sawmilling, scheelite mining, farming and most recently, film-making.

Relax and enjoy the homeward journey along Lake Wakatipu on one of the most scenic drives in the South Island.
